the holiday season

Oh hello there! I've been a terrible blogger! It seems like December has been a series of unfortunate events keeping me from blogging, the last being not having internet for a week! (It was horrible!) One of my resolutions is to not let anything deter me from actually posting more often! Well anyway, I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday and got everything they wanted!! I wanted to show you some of the goodies that I got either for the holiday season or that santa brought me (Well, santa mostly brought me money and I hit up the sales the next day - 30 minute line in Urban Outifitters, but worth it.)!

UO Owl Bank and Lenox jewelry box

Kimichi Blue floral tunic, Forever 21 Satin dress, We Who See wedge booties, F21 studded bag, F21 white tights, H&M black skirt, Silence and Noise printed leather skirt

Zara sweater, American Apparel velvet dress, Vintage Nine West lace-up boots, Ecote velvet top, Silence and Noise floral skirt, F21 necklace

F21 floral pre-plum dress, The Velvet Underground & Nico special edition vinyl, F21 striped crop top, F21 polka dot assymetrical top, Deena & Ozzy fingerless gloves, F21 beanie

I'm very excited about all these goodies, and I was proud that my boyfriend picked some of these out (such as the Owl bank, Silence&Noise leather skirt, and Velvet Underground vinyl) all on his own! And, thanks to day-after-christmas sales, I still have some money left for even more goodies. I know I have my eye on a new pair of BDG cigarette jeans from UO - since until January 10th all jeans are for sale for $39!! I also have my eye on more jewelry, for some reason I'm bad at buying it but I really want to.

Well I hope you all have a wonderful New Years eve! Personally, I'm more excited to wear my new velvet dress than to celebrate! ! But I hope you all have fun and look spectacular, I'll see you in 2010!

The Velvet Underground

Hello again bloggers! Sorry for the unexpected break, life has been way too busy. I finished finals earlier this week, but life was still hectic with packing and enjoying my final days at school (I'm transferring schools in the spring.) So I kind of took an un-planned break from the internet, but now I'm back! Seeing as its almost Christmas I've been working on my wishlist, and decided to do this post on one of the gifts I want: The Velvet Underground book, which was published this past October.

Clockwise from left: Nico, Reed, Morrison, Cale, and Tucker

The Velvet Underground first started up in New York City in the 60's with founding members Lou Reed and John Cale. Joined by by Sterling Morrison and Maureen "Moe" Tucker, the group was then discovered by Andy Warhol in 1965. At this time Warhol was trying to make himself an artist unlike those before him. Wanting to do more than just paint, he made himself a brand name and dabbled in print, movies and music. So he recruited the Velvet Underground for his multimedia roadshow, Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Warhol secured them a recording contract with MGM's Verve Records and urged them to work with the German singer, Nico. And so, their first album was released in 1967, The Velvet Underground & Nico, with the famous banana cover art done by Warhol, himself.

The first album was only somewhat successful back them, and the band broke with Warhol and Nico before their second album, White Light/White Heat in 1968. This album still featured their harsh, raw, and over-saturated sound, but was also only mildly successful. After these two albums, the band slowly fell apart, losing members and losing its signature sound. More albums were released, but the band was only a remnant of what it once was. While they might have not been the most famous when actually together, the band has since received the fame they deserved. They were cited by David Bowie as an influence, and Rolling Stone named The Velvet Underground & Nico the 13th "Greatest Album of All Time" in 2003, and the Velvet Underground ranked 19th in the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time" the next year. This month's NYLON talks about the book I mentioned earlier, saying:
"If Elvis Presley is the king of rock n' roll, then the Velvet Underground are its trash-talking, cigarette-smoking renegade princes(ses)."

Needless to say, they've become one of my favorite bands, and huge influence for me; inspiring me to wear more black and leather than I already do. Sometimes I really do wish I could go back to the 60's, I know that's a cliche thing to say now-a-days, but the more I find out about that time period the more amazing it is. Most of my favorite things in life have come out from that decade and around it. Living in the city in the Sixties just seems like an ideal, adventurous and amazing life. This book shows the 60's and the Velvet Underground's spirit: showing lots of photographs of the band, of Edie Sedgwick dancing around at Andy Warhol's Factory, flyers of their shows and more. This band, along with many like it, is definitely the kind of influence that I hope sticks around not only on fashion, but on music and more.

Anyway, since you all probably came here for a more fashion-related post, here's a set I put together inspired by The Velvet Undergorund.

December inspiration

I'm taking a quick break from studying to bring you some of my obsessions lately. I officially started this blog in the beginning of November and made a post with just different pictures of things that were inspiring me. I think I'm going to do something like this at the beginning of every month, and hopefully if and when I have more time actually do some fun collages/ inspiration boards! But for now here's what's on my mind for the wintery month of December!

lace, ballerinas, fur, the color beige, leather, gold, sequins, black (always), lingerie, Edie, Chanel (always)

like angels

Hello bloggers! Sorry for the lack of posts, I'm now entering finals period and have so many tests and papers to work on time that it seems time for small pleasures (like blogging!) is escaping me. I just wanted to post a short entry because after looking through all the photos I could find and low-quality youtube videos, the Victoria's Secret fashion show finally aired on (US) television tonight!!! I loved every second of it, even if I've now lost all my self-esteem! So here's some gorgeous pictures I came across!
